Mrs. Tanya Uyeda

I am orignally for Wisconsin and grew up in Milwaukee. I moved to Washington state after finishing my undergraduate degree from the Univ. of WI- Stevens Point. I worked in Kent School District as a Special Education Resource teacher for 10 years. During this time, I got a Masters degree from Lesley Univeristy in the area of Literacy and National Board Certificaion as an Exceptional Needs Specialist. I was hired in Mukilteo as a special education and joined the Olivia Park staff heading up the Resource Room. Then joined the third grade team 4 years ago. Last year, I renewed my Board Certification. Currently, I am working hard to learn all I can about Google classroom and all it's features for distance learning. I look forward to using this experience to improve my teaching skill set and being back in the classroom with my students! :)

    Next week…

    Reading – Next week we begin unit 3: making inferences. In this unit students explore characters, a key element of narrative text structure. They make inferences to understand characters’ traits and feelings as well as how they develop and change. They come to understand that stories are about characters, the problems they face, how they deal with those problems, and how they change as a result. Sometimes character change is dramatic; at other times character change can be as subtle as a realization or a new perspective. This is a 5-week unit so we will be working on making inferences through November.  

    Writing- Next week we begin unit 2: the writing process.  In this unit, students learn about the writing process by working with pieces of writing from their first drafts through publication. They will select a draft to develop and publish. They reread their work critically and revise it, replacing overused words with more interesting ones, and exploring strong opening sentences and effective titles. They learn procedures for proofreading for spelling and conventions using a resource. They write final versions of their writing and present to other author’s in our class.   

    Math- Next week we continue unit 1 and cover lessons 12-16. These lessons continue to work on basic multiplication and division for 4s, 1s and 0s, as well as solving and creating word problems. Students will also take quick quiz #3 covering lessons 10-14.   

    Star testing is nearly completed. We have a few students that need make-up tests and will complete those Monday. Students will sign on to our zoom meeting as usual and test with Ms. Moser; returning to our meeting when complete. Now that Star testing is completed, we will resume our regular 10:00-11:00 schedule. Class meeting will be 10:00-10:30, followed by a short break, then math practice and number talk. A short discussion of reading and writing as well as previewing the day’s work will wrap up our meeting.

    Daily assignments- Reading, Writing and Math assignments and discussions are posted. If your child has not yet completed and/or submitted work, please remind them to complete schoolwork daily allowing for flexibility and breaks. Posted work is due the Sunday at midnight to allow time to complete before the new week begins. Students should expect to read every day at least 30 minutes.  Raz-kids and Epic are reading resources, if you need additional reading material.

    La próxima semana...

    Lectura – La próxima semana comenzamos la unidad 3: haciendo inferencias. En esta unidad los estudiantes exploran personajes, un elemento clave de la estructura del texto narrativo. Hacen inferencias para entender los rasgos y sentimientos de los personajes, así como cómo se desarrollan y cambian. Llegan a entender que las historias son sobre los personajes, los problemas que enfrentan, cómo lidian con esos problemas y cómo cambian como resultado. A veces el cambio de carácter es dramático; en otras ocasiones el cambio de caracteres puede ser tan sutil como una realización o una nueva perspectiva. Esta es una unidad de 5 semanas, de modo que vamos a trabajar en hacer inferencias hasta noviembre. 

    Escritura- La próxima semana comenzamos la unidad 2: el proceso de escritura.  En esta unidad, los estudiantes aprenden sobre el proceso de escritura trabajando con piezas de escritura desde sus primeros borradores hasta la publicación. Seleccionarán un borrador para desarrollarlo y publicarlo. Releer su trabajo críticamente y revisarlo, reemplazando palabras sobreutilizadas por palabras más interesantes, y explorando frases de apertura fuertes y títulos efectivos. Aprenden procedimientos para la corrección de la ortografía y las convenciones mediante un recurso. Escriben versiones finales de su escritura y se presentan a otros autores de nuestra clase.  

    Matemáticas- La próxima semana continuamos la unidad 1 y cubrimos las lecciones 12-16. Estas lecciones continúan trabajando en la multiplicación básica y la división para 4s, 1s y 0s, así como la resolución y la creación de problemas de palabras. Los estudiantes también tomarán un cuestionario rápido #3 que cubre las lecciones 10-14.  

    Las pruebas estelares están casi terminadas. Tenemos algunos estudiantes que necesitan pruebas de maquillaje y los completaremos el lunes. Los estudiantes se firmarán en nuestra reunión de zoom como de costumbre y probarán con la Sra. Moser; volver a nuestra reunión cuando haya terminado. Ahora que las pruebas Star se han completado,  reanudaremos nuestro horario regular de 10:00-11:00. La reunión de la clase será de 10:00-10:30, seguida de un breve descanso, luego la práctica de matemáticas y la charla de números. Una breve discusión sobre la lectura y la escritura, así como la vista previa del trabajo del día terminará nuestra reunión.

    Asignaciones diarias: se publican las tareas y discusiones de lectura, escritura y matemáticas. Si su hijo aún no ha completado y/o enviado trabajo, por favor recuérdele que  complete las tareas escolares diariamente permitiendo flexibilidad y descansos. El trabajo publicado vence el domingo a medianoche para dar tiempo a completarse antes de que comience la nueva semana.     Happy Friday!

    If you didn’t make it to pick a supplies Wednesday, you can pick supplies up in the office from 9-4pm. 

     

    Reading – We continue to explore visualizing as a reading comprehension strategy to help us better understand our story and self-monitor. Students will have a chance to practice visualizing and connecting to the text with a few great read-alouds. In addition, we’ll begin to explore inferring by describing how characters feel.

     

    Writing- We continue to explore the work of professional authors to learn from them what we can do to generate ideas to write about. Next, we will explore the writing process. We’ll take a finished draft through all the steps of the writing process including revising, editing and publishing.

     

    Math- Lessons and assignments will work on building fluency for multiplications and divisions for 2s, 5s, 9s and 10s. Students will also work on solving and writing equations for word problems. This week we will also learn about 3s multiplications and divisions and use the area model for multiplications.

     

    Star testing will continue next week with Math. We will follow the same testing plan and have small groups of students test after the shortened class meeting time. Any make-up testing will take place as we go and be completed the week of October 19th.  Student’s testing days will remain the same, so if your child took the first test on Monday, they will test Math on Monday as well. Please see schedule in Schoology.  If available, please assist your child in logging in only and not to answer any questions, to obtain the most accurate information.

    Hello families!

    We will be taking the Star Reading test beginning Monday, October 5th.  Students will take the test in small groups of 4-5 students after the class meeting. Testing groups will remain on the class meeting Zoom and begin the test after others have exited. Testing should begin around 10:35. Test length varies but plan for at least 30-45 minutes for the test. Students will exit the meeting once the assessment is complete.  The same schedule and procedure will be used for Star Math testing scheduled to begin the week of October 12th.  Finally, reading assignments in Schoology will be modified given testing this week. Math assignments will be modified the following week during math testing. Please let me know if you have any questions!

      The next supply drop is Wednesday, October 7th from 12:00-5:00pm

  • Hello families and students!

        Here's what's planned for next week...

    Reading- We will begin Unit 2 on Visualizing. During this unit, student visualize to make sense of poetry and fiction. As they visualize, they informally use schema and make inferences. They will also begin an informal exploration of point of view as they consider the thoughts and feelings of characters in relation to their own. During IDR, students will continue to self-monitor and practice visualizing. 

    Writing- We will begin unit 1 on the writing community. The focus of this unit will be to build a writing community. Students will begin to hear and discuss examples of good writing and begin to learn about the writing practice of professional authors. They will explore prewriting techniques and write freely to build stamina for writing. 

    Math- We will continue unit 1 on multiplication and division. In lessons, this week we will work on multiplying and dividing by 2 and building fluency for 2s and 5s. If able, we will take our first math quiz for lessons 1-6. 

    *Beginning the week of October 5th, we will begin to administer the Star test. We will be testing in small groups of 5 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, after our class meeting. We will be administering the test over Zoom to ensure testing procedures. Please do not assist your child in answering any of the questions. Knowing what your child learning needs are is critical to my work with them and I need information of what they are able to do without assistance. If able, please help by ensuring a quiet testing place and minimize distractions. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello again!

       Congratulations on completing the first full week of school. For sure there were bumps along the way and probably more to come but I so appreciate your stick-with-it-attitudes and your willingness to persevere over any challenge. I firmly believe that we can do this if we stick together.  

      For next week...

       We will continue to slowly add in curriculum and will begin Math curriculum. Our first unit will run until about October and will focus on multiplication and division. Strategy cards or flash cards were sent home. I will be posting some homework routine to use with them or other math resources to practice the facts. Also, if your child has not yet installed and explored Kami. Please do. Here's a link for information on that app.  Kami  and How to use Kami to complete assignments

       Speaking of technology... You received a district message regarding technology support. There have been many reports of issues with Goggle Drive and Google docs but hopefully these problems have been solved. If problems continue, please contact the Technology Service Desk through the online request form or at 425.356.1207, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. 

      Finally, in an effort to provide additional academic support, I will be adding an afternoon time for office hours. Office hours would allow students to join me in a Zoom call and get additional support. I will post the link and meeting ID along with the password in Schoology. For now, starting next week (9/21/20) my office hours will be from 1:15-2:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I am still developing my schedule so times may change and I will keep you all posted on Wednesdays.

    Hello!  

      Please join us from 10:00-11:00 for our live instruction.  We will be doing our class meeting and going over the daily math routines and math talk (if time allows). This will also be a time to ask questions and see what work is coming up that day.  Also, make sure you are checking Schoology daily for the lessons and assignments. New learning starts next week and you don't want to miss out!

     Hello OP families!

      I am happy and excited to get to know my new students and take on the challenge of distance learning.

      The first day of school is September 2nd. Students will meet with me and see their classmates over Zoom. This will happen daily at 10:00-10:30 beginning September 2nd

     I am currently scheduling family conferences. Conferences will be scheduled between September 2nd - September 11th. These conferences will be held over Zoom. I will send Zoom links to parent email addresses on file. 

      I will link video directions to login to Zoom and Schoology. If possible, please review these direction before September 2nd.
